Bullet Proof Armour Clothing
The term Bullet Proof has gained a lot of popularity in today’s world. Be it an armour or vehicle, its bullet proof. Even police dogs have bullet proof outfits these days. So what exactly does the term bullet proof mean?
Bullet-Proof Armour clothing: A brief description
A bullet proof vest is any clothing that protects an individual from any weapon fired at them. It protects them by absorbing all the impact that the projectile may have on them. The basic principle behind a bullet is, the impulse created due to the force at which a bullet is discharged and the time taken for it to reach the target determines the impact on the target. Bullet-proof armour clothing with this in mind. This vest deforms a bullet and spreads the force uniformly in all directions throughout the clothing thus minimizing the impact at the point of contact. However, the energy that the bullet may carry will cause a small trauma on the human body.
History of Bullet-Proof Armour clothing:
There have been several instances in history which refer to the testing of such vests. The first testing seems to have been in the year 1561, when the then Roman emperor tested his armour against gun fire. Following this, many other nations started testing and developing bullet-proof armour clothing. The first form of these protective coverings was made of three layers of armour plate. However this was heavy and so Japan decided to make them out of silk. This was the first recorded soft vest. In due course of time, several other materials like cotton, chrome nickel steel, nylon and synthetic fibre were put to manufacture these vests. These experiments lead to a common design, but the raw materials used kept changing due to difference in the projectiles used.
Types of Bullet-Proof Armour clothing:
Based on the varying projectiles used, bullet-proof armour clothing can be classified into several types:
- Type I: This type of armour protects the individual against the shots fired from a Long rifle which shoots at a speed of 329 m/s. However, this armour is noa longer part of the standard.
- Type IIA: This new type protects from a projectile that is shot at a velocity of 373-382 m/s.
- Type II: An improvement of type IIA, this type deforms bullets which are shot at speeds around 436 m/s
- Type IIIA: The features present in this type are not very different from its earlier version. It helps in protecting against shots which record speeds of 448 m/s.
- Type III: A huge improvement from its former version. This type of armour protects the individual against bullets shot at a velocity of 847 m/s.
- Type IV: It is conditioned against bullets which travel at the speeds of 878 m/s
Thus, Bullet-proof armour clothing can be used to save the lives of many people on the war front and protect them from getting hurt in other instances as well for these unsung heroes do deserve to have a very long life.
